A little bit of the Grand Western in Somerset!

New for 2019: The Grand Western Canal is such a great asset in Mid Devon that we have been looking at how to extend its many attractions to a corner of Somerset.  The Friends are promoting a Park 'n Glide project that will enable commuters into Taunton to travel by sustainable solar-powered shuttles along a specially recreated piece of the Grand Western Canal from a station beside the Silk Mills car park where a new James Green Lift would be created, the first since 1838.  Another mile of canal following the historic route links the scheme with the West Somerset Railway.

We have been building support for the scheme among community leaders and residents and have completed a hydrological study to identify water sources.  We are now developing preliminary engineering ideas. The ramifications of this exciting project spread across most of Somerset.  It now has its own website - take a look and let your imagination run!

Although we are very excited by the opportunities for promoting the Grand Western Canal that this project may bring, please rest assured that we will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of the beautiful Mid Devon Country Park to ensure that all who love our grand waterway can enjoy it to the maximum, in whichever county they may be.
